    Machine à laver/ lave-linge

    Bonjour,

    I want to know the correct work for "washing machine" and I have so far encountered the following two words:
    Machine à laver and;
    lave-linge

    are both correct or just one?

    Re: Machine à laver/ lave-linge

    Hello,

    As a Quebecker, I personally would say « machine à laver » or (I know this one is a regionalism) « laveuse ».

    I don't know whether or not « lave-linge » is more common in Europe.

    merci Nicomon. Any know about the European version?
    I am travelling to both Quebec and France in November so would like to know if there is a difference.

    No problem, both are correct in Europe.
    Note however that "lave-linge" sounds more formal - if there's such a thing as formal language when talking about a washing machine.... haha.
    Seriously, "lave-linge" is more something you'd see in stores or catalogues; in everyday life, definitely go for "machine à laver".

    Bonjour,

    Lave-linge was creating when dish-washer became popular, to make the distinction easiest, but everyone would understand machine à laver as lave-linge.

    Lave-linge would also be understood in Quebec, but (to my knowledge) really isn't common usage. Just like LeQi said; you'll see it in catalogues.

    It sounds more like "clothes washer" than washing machine to me. As seen googling :
    La lessiveuse est une machine qui sert à laver le linge, les draps et les vêtements en les faisant bouillir. Cet appareil est rarement employé de nos jours, sauf dans certains grands hôtels et dans les hôpitaux. L’appareil électroménager qu’on utilise dans nos maisons pour laver le linge et les vêtements est une MACHINE À LAVER ou une LAVEUSE. Enfin, l’électroménager qui sert à sécher le linge et les vêtements s’appelle SÉCHEUSE. Les termes lave-linge et sèche-linge, qui sont assez répandus en Europe, sont rarement usités chez nous.
