    lassen

    Could be the sentence:
Die Schüler können den Lehrer nicht hören.
    transformed into this sentence:
Der Lehrer lässt sich von den Schülern nicht hören.
Meaning: The teacher cannot be by the students heard. (the students cannot hear the teacher)

The passive voice is formed with "werden" + past participle:

Der Lehrer kann von den Schülern nicht gehört werden.

    Edit:
In some cases "lassen" can be used instead of "werden":

Man kann die Tür nicht schließen. (active)
Die Tür kann nicht geschlossen werden. (passive)
Die Tür lässt sich nicht schließen. (pseudo-passive)

But that doesn't work with "hören" in your example.

I found this explanation at canoo.net:
The construction sich lassen + infinitive expresses passiveness and the modal meaning of können:
    ...
This construction should not be confused with another passive sich-lassen-construction which has always an animate subject (person or animal) and whose meaning is zulassen/veranlassen:
    ...

So the animate subject ("der Lehrer") seems to be the problem.
