    Hi

Is a костёр a communal fire at a campsite, or does it rather refer to individual fires lit by separate groups?

By the way, is it a native Russian word? I'd be most grateful for any etymological observations.

All the best, and many thanks,

    Simon

There's no distinction whether it's communal or individual, a костёр is a костёр.

It is considered to be slavic word, originating from костерь - hard plant bark used for making yarn.

Высоцкий. Sorry for offtopic. It's just that one song, in which he sings about костер, came accross my mind. )
