    Shalom lekulam!

I am reading a humour book by Irit Linur. I have just found that sentence:

נעליים בלי גרביים: לא שזה נראה רע אבל זה מריח כמו מסע כומתה

What is that final phrase "massa kumta"? I know that massa is a journey, and kumta is the soldier beret, but I cannot understand the sense of the comparison!

Toda raba! Zo hapaam harishona sheani kotev baforum haze!

מסע כומתה is a hard and strenuous journey of dozens of kilometers that combating soldiers must do in order to receive their unit's berret. I guess that it smells very bad because of the sweat and mud that the soldiers carry with them.
