מהו המקור של המילה הזאת, עם משמעות של taxi?

The word was coined by Yossef Bass[1] and it comes from /moneh/ (מונה: counter, gauge; the widget used in a taxi) + the vowels/suffix of /mekhonit/ (מכונית: car).

I wonder: if we put the root (shoresh) of מונה in the mishkal of מכונית, do we arrive at מונית?

I don't think מכונית was created using shoresh+mishkal but using word+suffix (מכונה + -ית = מכונית), which is the same way מונית was created.
