I read this portion of a sentence in a book by Tokushi Kasahara. My question is, since "中国民衆" appears to be the subject/actor of the underlined clause, why is "から" used instead of "が"?

In this sentence, "から" sounds weird to me.
I think it should be "が".
If it's "から", it needs to be changed from "くわえる" to "くわえられる".
