In a newspaper, I saw this question being asked to the candidates for 參院選.

I am not sure what the meanings of 信長 秀吉 家康. Are they people's names? What differences are there?

The three are famous medieval samurai leaders.
I'm not sure but my impression of their characters (maybe wrong...sorry)
Nobunaga ODA - with mighty force
Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI - witty talented tactics/strategic
Ieyasu TOKUGAWA - patient, prudent, certainty, long-term success

The most famous 3 pieces of fictitious Senryu (a kind of Haiku) describe each of their characters in general.

Nobunaga
If you don't sing for me, I'll kill you."
Hideyoshi
If you don't sing for me, I'll make you sing."
Ieyasu
If you don't sing for me, I'll wait till you sing."

ホトトギス = a kind of bird. refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesser_Cuckoo
