a good staying racehorse

    Hello,

    Would you please explain what "a good staying racehorse" means here? Specifically, what I don't understand here is the word "staying".

    He was a good staying racehorse winning two Wellington Cups, the Queen Elizabeth Cup in 1977 where the Queen herself presented the Cup, and the Sydney Cup in 1978.
