a grinding noise

    Hi!
    How would you say "grinding" when referring to a sound, for example in:

    Joe knew it was time to get the brakes on his car changed when he heard a grinding noise every time he slowed down.

    Ciao! I would use the verb "stridere", like

    "Joe capì che era ora di cambiare i freni quando sentì lo stridere dei freni ogni volta che rallentava".

    There's also the adjective "stridente": un rumore stridente

    Await native confirmation, but I think you could also say:

    lo stridore dei freni
    un rumore stridulo

    Yes, you can say that! "Stridore dei freni" is perfect.
