In The Catcher in the Rye, the author describes one of the caracters as "a swell guy, a hot-shot"

Can you think of a good translation in French?

    Thanks,

I don't think swell refers to the way the guy looks - it's more like a good guy, someone likeable - un bon mec. A hot-shot to me means very successful - not necessarily surdoué, but just very good at his job - très brillant peut-être?

I don't know if you agree, but doesn't hot-shot more generally imply a person that occupies an important position in a company, for example? I agree that that would obviously mean that they're successful, but not necessarily that they're good at their jobs - bosses are in general hot-shots no matter if they do their job well or not... ;)

    My suggestions are:
a hot-shot = une personne très importante (ça claque moins, mais bon! :))
a swell guy = un mec formidable / génial / super cool
I see 'swell' as synonymous to 'great', but there might be some difference in nuance there...
