    Il valait beaucoup d'argent

    ?

    but i don't know how to get the more informal 'whole' in?

    je pense qu'il s'agit là d'une expression québécoise Corneille
    en France, on dirait "ça valait/ représentait/ une importante somme d'argent" :)

    For me "..a whole lot of..." in the original English is less formal in tone than your equivalent in French above.

    Could we use "...un paquet d'argent..." to give a more colloquial tone here ?

    oh yes of course
    if you want to be colloquial, you can also say "un paquet de thunes"

    J'avais en tête une forme proche, et effectivement d'un langage familier, pour traduire cette phrase:
    Ca valait un sacré paquet d'argent.
