    Good morning,

¿Alguna sugerencia?

As the father used to be absent, the mother played a decisive role in order to bring up the children. They had to learn the most essential lessons of racial etiquette before became valuable and be sold away.

    Gracias.

The sentence is a little strange, absent could be ok but 'before became valuable and be sold away', no. Could you indicate the sentence you're translating, please?

    Yes:

As the father was usually absent, the mother played a decisive role in raising the children. They had to learn the most relevant lessons on racial etiquette before becoming valuable and available for sale.
