I really have no talent for idiomatic expressions:(. I know there's an equivalent for this in English, just can't think of it. The only one I can come up with is "to make ends meet", but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. Creative minds, please help!

Does anyone have a maybe more informal way of putting it?

    Cheers.

A direct translation makes no sense to an AE-speaker since we are normally paid every two weeks, not monthly.

ejay's to make ends meet is a good equivalent to describe a tight budget. We also might say in AE to scrape together enough money to pay the rent/pay your bills.

(Wouldn't putting icing on the cake be more like mettre du beurre dans les épinards ?)
