Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

    J'ai crû comprendre que ça avait un quelconque rapport avec la bible, quelqu'un pourrait-il m'éclairer sur le sens de cette phrase?

    Hello Krimo,

    It does have a Biblical connotation but I can't quote it chapter and verse. It says, 'From dust you were made and to dust you will return.'

    It is used at funeral services. At the graveside the minister says, 'And so we commit the body of xxxxxxxxx into God's keeping. Earth to earth, ashes to ashes and dust to dust.'

    So it means "Tu es né poussière et tu retournera poussière(...)"...

    It is from the Book of Common Prayer, at least according to the link quoted.

    It's wonderful how an English person, who remembers her Bible well, can so easily understand the French translation. :)

    J'ai trouvé dans le Livre des prières publiques, qui est une traduction du Book of Common Prayer d'où est tiré la citation : "nous déposons son corps dans le sépulcre, la terre à la terre, les cendres aux cendres, la poussière à la poussière..."
