aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda

    Por favor, ¿alguien me puede decir si existe en inglés una frase que tenga un significado exacto o similar a "aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda? Se lo utiliza para decir que algo no puede ser mejorado porque es escencialmente malo.

    I've seen this expression in the newspapers: lipstick on pig. I think it could be equivalent to aunque la mona....

    I'm not sure (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think it was Obama who , during his presidental campaign, said this about the republican policies:"you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig". But maybe it is just an expression he made up.

    Any comments on this?

    No, Obama didn't make it up. It's an expression that's been around for a long time (at least in the U.S.).

    I've seen it several times but always in the same context, the last presidential election. That's why I wasn't sure whether it was something made up recently.

    En español utilizamos este dicho que se refiere a que por muy guapo/a que se vista, el o la que es feo/a, feo/a se queda, ¿Hay algún dicho similar en inglés?

    I just came across this thread. In english from the uk you would propably say "you can´t polish a turd".

    La frase se refiere a una persona sin clase que intenta verse más importante de lo que realmente es. Y es una frase bastante racista.
