Avere una famiglia alle spalle

    to have a family supporting him (??)
    does exist any other similar 'idiom' in english?

    in this case there isn't the negative connotation that living off one's family suggests, so I would say instead "to have a family to fall back on (alle spalle) for support"

    ERGO.....
    avere una famiglia a cui (poter) ricorrere, su cui poter contare (giusto)

    Ciao vorrei chiedervi se va bene la traduzione della seguente frase, che si ricollega a questo tread:

    Vorrei che i miei figli abbiano la consapevolezza di avere una famiglia unita alle spalle che li protegge e li sostiene.

    I'd like that my sons had the awareness to have a family united to fall back on that protect them and support them.

    You started out well. Here are a few changes I'd make:

    I'd like my sons to be aware that they have a close-knit family that they can fall back on, one that will protect and support them.

    Un altro modo semplice per dirlo e' behihd them:

    .... have a family behind them ...

    Cao, mi sembra che abbia trovato la riposta ma....

    Si traduce "sono persone sole che magari hanno una famiglia alle spalle, hanno anche figli ..." come... they are single even if they have a family to fall back on.

    The context is about poor people in Italy, who go to mense per i poveri....
