    el párrafo original es:
The Universe is one of the major newspapers in Ecuador and its headquarters are in Guayaquil. Its founders were close in business to Victor Emilo Estrada and Rafael Guerrero Valenzuela, both directors of the first and second CRE.

    mi traducción es :
El Universal es uno de los periódicos más importantes del Ecuador y de su sede en Guayaquil. Sus fundadores "were close in business to" Victor Emilo Estrada y Rafael Guerrero Valenzuela, ambos directores de la primera y segunda CRE.

"were close in business to" = estar a punto de ... ?

I think the idea is that the founders had close business ties with Victor Emilo Estrada etc.
