carretes que sirven de guia

    hola foreros,

    I'm translating a document on constructing a subsea pipeline and wondering if you can help with this sentence:

    dicho equipo consta de un equipo de tiro que ira apoyado en una losa de hormigon y consta de unos carretes que sirven de guia de cable de acero que se colocara previamente.

    my attempt: this device comprises of a winch secured by a block of concrete and consists of a number of steel reels ?? to guide the steel winch cable that will have been previously fitted.

    I can't really picture what's happening so any suggestions welcome. thank you.
