Can an idea "underlie" in English?

I have wrote this sentence. I know that "underlie" is perfect in Spanish with the meaning of "be the theoretic basis of", but is this meaning correct in English?

The purpose of this report is to present her research on business discourse, whose underlying idea is that the analysis of discourse productions in business contexts can contribute to an understanding of business and its practices.

    Thanks

RTa, could you tell us what you actually wanted to translate (the word/expression in Spanish), please?

    Thank you! Saludos.
