    Trato de decir que la profesora no se daba a basto por que habia demasiados estudiantes con necesidades especiales.

    Darse abasto (together, not separated)= to be enough, to be able to handle a situation.

    - la profesora no se daba a basto por que había demasiados estudiantes con necesidades especiales.

    - The professor couldn't handle the situation because there were many students with special needs.

    I think I should remark that the word is "abasto". It does not go separated, therefore you shouldn´t say "a basto".

    I think "she couldn't cope with" would be better, as beg says.
