How Can I translate that into English? In this case "promesa " may entail two things: a promise made to God by the petitioner in exchange by some kind of miracle or whatever. The other sense of "promesa" is just something asked for by the petitioner.

My try is "People go and leave their promises/petitions at church"

    Thanks :D

A promise made to God by the petitioner in exchange for a miracle or a wish come true.

Normally, you would ask God for something, and they 'pay' back somehow. Many churches are full of 'promesas', like body organs made out of silver, wedding dresses, etc.
