    Hello,
I've been unsuccessfully searching for a difference in meaning between θάλασσα and πέλαγο (or πέλαγος ?) but all I can find is that both words mean "the sea".

Is there a difference? Or maybe there used to be one in Ancient Greek?

Pelagos refers to a wide geographical area of sea, possibly including islands. It should be thousands of sq miles. The term "thalassa" is very general. We say "this summer I'm going to thalassa for holidays", but not "to the pelagos for holidays". "It smells thalassa" but not "smells pelagos".
