I've heard this a lot in anime, mostly girls. It seems cute for me. Does this expression present in everydays of Japan? Or you can only hear this in Anime? xD I'm curious as I haven't been there.

    Hi,
I believe it's just an elongated emotional voice of suspicion "E?" (with a rising tone), not from any normal word.

And, I'd say this word is also spoken even by boys too.
But in any situation, this "long" voice sounds childish and is normally heard among close and familiar friends.

aahh.. sou ka.. arigatou.. Anyways, has it been a long years since this expression had been famous? Or this was then a very unique expression by the Japanese for a very long time already? Just curious..

    Hmmmm..........
I don't think Japanese people think it's famous nor unique.
We don't think about it, really.
It's just a noise we make when surprised.
I'm not sure, but I think it's been around for a long time.

It's a normal locution in Japanese along with "へぇ?!". I remember when I first started learning Japanese and there was a recording during a listening exam that had the line:"へえええええええ???!!!!本当ですか???" It was soooo exagerated it was hilarious! Couldn't stop laughing in the test, then again, neither could the teacher!:p
