The gift of the Magi, O.Henry
"Eight dollars a week or a million a year- what is the difference? A mathematician or a wit would give you the wrong answer. The magi brought valuable gifts, but that was not among them. This dark assertion will be illuminated later on." I don't get it... Why does he compare someone who earns 8 dolllars a week with other who ears a million a year, and what means "that was not among them" in here?

The magi brought valueable gifts, but that [gift] (the actual answer to the question about the difference between 8 dollars a week and a million a year) was not among them [the gifts the magi brought]".
