FR: I didn't know how difficult it was

    Bonjour,

    Je veux traduire "I didn't know how difficult it was to speak French"

    The best I can come up with is "Je ne savais pas comment difficile il était de parler bien le français", but that sounds very clumsy.

    If someone could improve the translation for me I'd be very grateful!

    Assuming the contraction in the English original is deliberate and we are therefore dealing with a slightly less formal kind of language, I would say:

    "Je ne savais pas à quel point c'était difficile de bien parler français"

    Yes, à quel point is very natural here.
    In the same spirit, je n'imaginais pas would be even more natural than je ne savais pas:
    Je n'imaginais pas à quel point il était difficile de parler français
    Je n'imaginais pas à quel point parler français était difficile
