I came across the sentence "Ma lettre lui a brisé le cœur" in my textbook. I understand that the standard form is "briser le cœur de quelqu'un", though I don't get why the indirect pronoun lui replaces de quelqu'un in this case. Don't the indirect pronouns substitute for à/pour qch/qn only?

The standard form can also be "briser le coeur à quelqu'un", which explains why it is correct to use "lui" in this sentence.
