Normally, and I haven't given it much thought plus my French is not outstanding, I'd say: Nous sommes anciens amis. A fellow French corrected me yesterday and said it wasn't natural. Here is the explanation he gave: When des is followed by an adjective starting with a vowel, we contract the des to d'. Nous sommes d'anciens amis. What I don't understand is why we would have to put des before anciens amis.
