    hello all,

would anyone know how to say "le fruit du hasard" in English, as in "the result of a coincidence"?

    Thank you very much!

Could you give a sample sentence (in French)? I'm not sure I fully understand the French expression. Thanks.

Depending on the context, you could say "It's just dumb luck," as when you would reply to a question with "ah, c'est le fruit du hasard !"

    sure, for instance:

La hausse des prix n'est pas le fruit du hasard, mais découle d'un ensemble de facteurs savamment orchestrés.

    or

Leur reconnaissance par le Sénat n'est sûrement pas le fruit du hasard.

it really means the result of luck, or coincidence, etc.

    thanks!

OK, we could still use more context (pretty please, Brivez), but here are some ideas:

    - a lucky break
    - dumb luck (thanks, Poulette)
    - a chance outcome
    - the luck of the draw

Ce n'est pas le fruit du hasard = It isn't/wasn't just a coincidence.

In this case, it could be translated thusly:

The rise in prices is not the result of chance, but derives from a number of carefully orchestrated factors.

    or

Their being recognized by the Senate is surely not a coincidence! (thanks Pheelieneerie)

Sorry, Brivez - our posts crossed before I saw your explanation! Thanks so much for the examples.

La hausse des prix n'est pas le fruit du hasard
    - The increase in price was not an accident, but the result of clever orchestrations
    Or
    - It wasn't luck that caused the price to rise, but a series of cleverly orchestrated steps/acts...

    Hope that helps.

And if I want to say, "Étiez-vous tanné de votre ancien style ou est-ce que ce changement radical était seulement le fruit du hasard?"

Can I say, "was that deep change only a coincidence?"

    Thank you :)
