Get away with (it)

    How do you say "that was a close shave, but we got away with it"?
    And "Some people get away with murder these days"?

    The root you're looking for is ח-מ-ק, h-m-q.
    When conjugated in hitpa'el (and possibly qal) you get the notion of "get away with".
    It's not a complete translation because "ח-מ-ק" implies "to distance oneself"/"to slip away", so we say "לחמוק/להתחמק מעונש".
    "בימינו יש אנשים שמתחמקים מעונש על..." = "some people get away (distance themselves) from punishment...".
