If you translate "I go to a restaurant" literally, you get
    "Je vais à un restaurant".

This sounds rather awkward so is it better to say
"Je vais au restaurant" even though you want to say "to a restaurant" not "to the restaurant" ?

It's 'Je vais au restaurant' (—> "to the restaurant") or 'Je vais dans un restaurant' (—> "to a restaurant").

("Je vais à un restaurant" is bad grammar, I think).

    Merci beaucoup, xtrasystole!

'Je vais dans un restaurant' sounds much better.

I'd be interested to know why "Je vais à un restaurant" is bad grammar, though?

I don't know, actually. Maybe it's not so much bad grammar as bad sounding ("à un" sounds a bit awkward, to me at least :) ).

That's what I thought - it's very nice to know that someone who is French agrees with me! :)
