    "He tried and tried but nothing happened."

    La licorne essayait et essayait, mais …?

    Context: A little unicorn is trying to perform his first bit of magic.

    How would I say "nothing happened" ?

    "mais ne arrivait rien"?

    This might be a little loose, collloquial, but I've heard it said, and it's pleasing to the ear...

    Non. La licorne, c'est féminin, même si ça n'a qu'une corne...
    Mon effort (je ne suis pas complètement de mauvaise foi);)
    Elle avait beau essayer et réessayer, rien n'y fit.
