I'm currently translating an Indian novel where the authors says : "Jitu had managed an impressive third division in college."
What does "third division" exactly refers to?

Possibly a sarcastic remark! Depending on how many marks a student obtains, he/she could go into the top band (first division), middle band (second division) and low band (third division). I hope this clarifies your query but it might be best to wait for other friends' input.

Thanks a lot, Qureshpor, it probably is a sarcastic remark, since the next sentence is : "He was BA pass, an important qualification." Does that mean that might impress prospective in-laws?

QP saaHib is right about Third Division being the lowest band. Any lower and one would fail the examination!

Yes, BA Pass should impress prospective in-laws if the story is set in an earlier time frame.
