    Hello,

I am working on a translation and I need to split two word for editorial design purposes, but I don't know the rules in English to do that. The words are:

    encourages
    generation

In Spanish, it could be encoura-ges and genera-tion. Is it the same in English?

    Thank you in advance!

  2. Well, they have more than two syllables. En-cour-a-ges. Gen-er-a-tion. So you could split it "encour-ages" and "gener-ation" if you want to split the words in the middle.

Just a note -- many dictionaries, including online dictionaries such as www.m-w.com, will show you where the word can be split by indicating each syllable:

For example, here is the way "encourage" is listed at www.m-w.com:

    en·cour·age
