What I would like to say is:

The first time I went to Italy I found that without the language I was lost. In fact, I felt like a fish out of water. So, I decided to learn it.

I'm not sure about the use of the "passato prossimo" in my translation attempt.

    Vi ringrazio in anticipo.

    Good job. Two typos. :)

Actually typos were three: effeti -> effetti

About the use of "passato prossimo":
in spoken language is perfectly correct, for my personal taste I'd use the "passato remoto" in written language or/and when "the fact" happened long ago.
