    how would I translate this correctly?

    "I thought you were talking to someone with your big happy man face"

    my attempt:

    "pensaba que estabe hablando a alguien con su grande féliz cara masculino"

    My try: "Pensé que estuviera hablando a alguien con su cara de gran hombre feliz"

    is it pensé or pensaba? I find it impossible to know when to use preterite or imprefect in situations like this...
