At times, after hearing a patient explain a problem to me in Spanish, I want to say: "I want to be sure that I understand you." I am female. The speaker is male. I found an on-line translation that says: "Quiero estar segura de que usted entiende." Is that the best translation or is there something simpler? Muchas gracias.

No, that is not quite correct: your translation to Spanish says: "I want to be sure you understand".

One way to say it would be "Quiero estar segura de que lo entiendo".

Another way to say it could be "Quiero asegurarme de que le entiendo"
