Icelandic: hvenær or hvenar?

    How is "hvenær" pronounced? As it is written (i.e. with a clear "æ") or more like "hvenar"?

    With initial-stress, it's tricky to realise a full diphthong so it is reduced to something more like '-ar', as you said.

    Það fer eftir því hversu vel máli farinn maður er. Ég nota hvort tveggja / bæði. Fer eftir því hversu hratt ég er að tala og við hvern ég er að tala. Ég mundi líklega nota "Hvenær" ef ég væri að tala við gamla manneskju eða þegar ég væri að reyna að tala skýrt, á meðan að "Hvenar" hljómar óformlegra. Stundum er það jafnvel stytt í "Kenar".

    Depends on how wellspoken the person is. I use both, depending on how fast I talk and with whom I'm speaking. I would probably use "Hvenær" when speaking with older people and when trying to speak clearly while "Hvenar" sounds more informal. Sometimes it's even shortened to "Kenar".

    That's useful. I've been really frustrated as I can't pick out the diphthongs and now see why!
