idle free zone ,turn engine off.

It is a sign board near a parking lot,Vancouver,Canada.

What does "idle free zone" mean? Thanks.

Possibly because the atmosphere would be severely affected by having a collection of cars all standing still but with engines running (ie their engines are "idling") the authority concerned has ordered that engines should be switched off.
