I am asking to change the date of a planned event. What is the best way to say "Sorry for the inconvenience"?

"Es tut mir leid, wenn ich Ihnen (Euch / Dir) dadurch Umstände bereitet habe."

As you are at the time of asking, I'd recommend to use the present tense.
Es tut mir leid, wenn ...
    - ich Ihnen dadurch Unmstände bereite.
    - Ihnen dadurch Umstände entstehen.

    That alternative is especially elegant!

If you know that the other party already had any inconveniences and want to apologize, then write:
Für die dadurch entstandenen Umstände möchte ich mich vielmals bei Ihnen entschuldigen.

Of course you have to write the request for the postponement first, so that you can refer to it with "die dadurch entstandenen Umstände".
