How would you translate this? It's one question the applicant´s referee must answer in a reference form

in what capacity do you know the applicant?

    Does it mean:
¿Bajo qué cargo conoce al solicitante?
Does it refer to the position of the referee or of the applicant?

It just means "how do you know the applicant". The person who is referring the applicant (the reference) needs to specify whether he/she was the applicant's teacher/professor/former boss/ former co-worker etc.

There is no way to know to whose position it refers. I would translate just as it reads: ¿En qué capacidad conoce Ud. al solicitante?
