In the subject of formal letters, when someone replies quickly to your letter is the phrase " thank you for your prompt reply" always in place or does "thank you for your quick reply" also in use or is there a third phrase.

In a formal letter the word "prompt" is preferable to "quick".
You might also use "swift response".
