My grandmother is dying

    I'm trying to explain to my pen pal that my grandmother is dying. (Yes, really. :()

    Would this be an appropriate explanation?

    إنها تحتضر جدتي

    While it's for the Egyptian dialect, this thread can be of help.
    Anyway تحتضر feels like the actual process of death is going on right now. It sounds harsh.
    You can say that حالتها متأخرة or ليس لديها الكثير من الوقت or سنفقدها بين اللحظة والاخرى
    or a combination of all that.

    Writing in Arabic is usually done in quite formal language, e.g.
    جدتي على أبواب الوفاة
