Some friend of ours said to us when we met that her mother had died. My Finnish friend said "Otan osaa" (???) if I heard it correctly.

What could he have said? And what could I have said in such a situation to the person?

    He said "My condolences".

You can say "Otan osaa" or "Osanottoni".

Plus, depending on the solemnity of the situation, you can also say Ei kai? / Ikävä kuulla! / Harmi juttu! / Voi miten ikävää! / Olen todella (tosi) pahoillani!
