i would like to say, "a large number of people in other countries speak english fluently." i am confused by what preposition to use for "in other countries." here is my sentence so far:

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

to translate your sentence I'd rather say :

(if you want to stick to the original)

you could also say something like :
"Beaucoup de personnes à l'étranger parlent parfaitement anglais."
("à l'étranger" means "in other countries" only if the narrator is in the country he's talking about, for example the narrator is british and is talking about people speaking english outside the UK)

    hope this can help :)
