pick up after them

    It's a paper about nurses union in a US hospital in 2002.

    “This place can be awful,” one nurse recalled telling a reporter. The doctors can make you feel like you’re worthless, like you’re
    disposable. Like you should be thankful to pick up after them.”

    I'm not sure to understand that last phrase, the meaning of "pick up after them" (them being the doctors).

    « Cet endroit peut être épouvantable, déclarait une infirmière à un journaliste. Les médecins peuvent vous faire sentir que vous êtes inutile, comme si vous ne comptiez pour rien. Comme si vous deviez leur être reconnaissante d’avoir bien voulu "pick up after them" ??

    'To pick up after someone' is to tidy up after them - to put away their tools, do their washing up, throw away their rubbish, etc.

    C'est ce que je dirais spontanément (mais je n'eusse osé le proposer, croyant que c'était une tournure québécoise). :)
