How to translate "porre le basi" in this context?

"Re Vittorio Emanuele ha posto le basi per il processo di unificazione italiana."

    My attempt:

"King Victor Emmanuel set the fundations for the process of unification of Italy."

    Thanks!

Alla voce fondamenta, il dizionario di WR riporta:

gettare le -a di qcs. to lay the foundations for sth.

Usually we "lay" or "set [down]" or "put down" or "dig" foundations in English. We can also say, "laid [or put down] the basis for ..."

So maybe: King Victor Emmanuel set/laid the foundations [or, laid the basis] for the process of Italian unification.
