    From the U.S. perspective:

    A "general knowledge test" normally is a test about a wide variety of subjects, including geography, history, television, etc. See HERE, for example.

    If you are talking about testing somebody's knowledge of English, we talk about "English comprehension tests." See HERE for examples.

    As you can see from the samples, we normally don't specify "general" English, but assume that if no specialized area is specified, that the comprehension test is "general."

    Note also, that unless you are talking about a specific test with a formal title, that only "English" is capitalized.
