put yourself in their shoes

    "Поставь себя на их место".
    The key expression is marked bold, and can be used alone without any "put yourself" part.

    "На их месте я пошёл бы в кино" = "I would go to the cinema [if I were] in their shoes".
    "А как бы ты поступил на их месте?" = "And what would you do [if you were] in their shoes?"

    Представь себя на их месте. Попробуй встать на их место. These variants are stylistically neutral.
    Вообрази себя в их шкуре. Примерь на себя их шкуру. Попробуй влезть в их шкуру. These variants are rude.
