Is there a Colombian Spanish legal & financial expert out there who can explain to me exactly what a "Revisor Fiscal" is in the context of a nonprofit corporation?

    Sample sentence:

The functions described seem much broader than those of an accountant or tax adviser.

I am not Colombian and I'm not an expert, so I'm not sure if I can help.

I think "revisor fiscal" corresponds to "inspector de Hacienda" in Spain. That is a tax inspector for you...

I would agree if this were in a government context, but this is a position with a nonprofit corporation.

Revisor fiscal is an accounts inspector. For any kind of institution in private, public, etc.

I would have thought it was simply a tax auditor.

I've struggled with this because to my knowledge there is really no equivalent in the English-speaking world.

In Colombia, for example, a revisor fiscal is sort of a company ombudsman or auditor. The role of this person is to ensure on behalf of a company's shareholders that the company's management is performing well and being wise with shareholders' investment. As far as I understand, they play an independent oversight role on fiscal and managerial matters.

    ¿Como se traduce Revisor fiscal?
¿Es correcto Tax Auditor o Tax Inspector?

    Gracias

    Hola Wilson:

"...Corporations must have a statutory auditor (revisor fiscal). They will also be under surveillance of the Superintendent of Companies...."

Very late, but still... esto puede ayudar.

    Hi!

I have been working in a Big Four company for more than five years, and this experience let me suggest that the correct translation for "Revisor Fiscal" is Statutory Auditor, who is the responsible to audit the financial statements of the companies, this role is mandatory under Colombian laws.

Terms like Tax Auditor, Tax Inspector and Comptroller are more focused to other financial roles within the corporations.

    Best regards!
