I'm getting to be confused about the generic reference in English. It is related to both number and articles so that my confusion gets double. So, I have written whatever is possible below.

    1. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are mammal.
    2. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are small mammal
    3. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are a mammal.
    4. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are a small mammal.
    5. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are the mammal.
    6. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are mammals.
    7. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are small mammals.
    8. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are the mammals.
    9. Rodents such as the hamster and mouse are the small mammals.

I guess #1 and #2 should be wrong, and #5 and #8 are possible in grammar but they don't seem to be generic reference. (If not, please corrent me.) The rest seem possible to me. Am I right?

    Many thanks in advance!
